Scouts to Collect Goods for the Needy

Ventura County residents shouldn’t be surprised Saturday if a Girl or Boy Scout rings their doorbell asking for canned food or used clothing.
The Scouts are collecting what they hope will amount to 100,000 cans of food for food banks and clothing for Goodwill Industries outlets.
County Sheriff Larry Carpenter is chairman of the 1998 Scouting for Food and Clothing program.
Scouts will blanket the county from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, collecting empty bags they left on residents’ porches a week earlier.
Beyond helping needy residents, the 10,000 Boy and Girl Scouts taking part will gain experience in public service, Carpenter said.
“This is their first major joint community service project,” Carpenter said.
