FAIRBANKS, Alaska — A man who hid in his house with a semiautomatic rifle and ammunition fatally shot one officer and wounded another in a New Year’s Day shootout that ended when the gunman killed himself, authorities said Friday.
Kevin Lamm, 26, became only the second police officer killed in the line of duty in Fairbanks in 90 years.
Police said the shootout began early Thursday evening when Lamm and two other officers went to a house to check on Joey Lee Dewolf, whom friends described as suicidal. Investigators later said he was hiding behind a blanket tacked over a doorway and that he was surrounded by clips of ammunition.
Dewolf, 27, was shot in the stomach and arm by police before shooting himself in the head, police said Friday. Officer Matt Soden was grazed by bullets. He was treated and released.
