Lott, Malin Make Their Move Into the Quarterfinals

Steve Lott of Canoga Park and Gene Malin of Woodland Hills advanced to the quarterfinals Wednesday at the USTA National Men’s 45 Hardcourt Championships at the Westlake Tennis & Swim Club.
Lott defeated Tom Wire of Westlake Village, 7-5, 6-3, in the round of 16. Lott will play Roy Rocero of Stockton today at 12:30.
Malin defeated Dennis Olson of Mountain View, 6-0, 6-2, and will play Bill Roach of Papillion, Neb., today at 12:30.
In another match, Tom Morley of Irvine outlasted Rick Rozen of Woodland Hills, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Mike McNulty of Moorpark and Duke Grondin advanced to the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Richard Taylor of Watsonville, Calif., and Gary Cruz of Westlake Village.
McNulty and Grondin will play Davis Austin of Camarillo and Ross Boling of Whitelake, Mich., who received a first-round bye, on Friday.
Luis P. Glass of San Diego and Tom Monahan of Coronado, Calif., defeated Larry Blair of Newbury Park and Amad Cahn of Westlake Village, 6-4, 6-3.
Steve Futchko of Upland and Rudy Sanchez of Fullerton beat Harvey Mardyks of Camarillo and Jurgen Jansons of Westlake Village, 6-4, 6-4.
Gewan Maharaj of Tampa, Fla, and Robbie Wheatley of Palm Desert, beat Jim Bilicki of Thousand Oaks and Shannon Blackwell of Shannon, Texas, 6-3, 6-2.
