Chavez Arrives Home, Is Arrested

MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s greatest boxer, Julio Cesar Chavez, was arrested on tax charges Friday as he returned home after a victory in a Connecticut fight.
Federal police met Chavez’s plane as it arrived in the northwestern city of Culiacan and arrested him, according to the Televisa network.
The federal attorney general’s office said Chavez was arrested on tax evasion charges, but said he would be eligible for release on bail.
Televisa quoted Chavez’s attorney, Luis Medina, as saying the arrest is apparently related to a 1996 arrest warrant on tax evasion. That case seemed to have been settled, but Medina said Chavez’s representatives had not received a formal certificate of the settlement from the Treasury Secretariat.
On Thursday, Chavez--101-2-2 and a former six-time world champion--stopped Ken Sigurani at 2:09 of the third round.
