Bell Rings Up Berth in Championship Game
The Bell High boys’ soccer team advanced to the City Section championship match Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over Birmingham at Bell.
Benja Covarrubias scored both goals for Bell, the game-winner breaking a 1-1 tie with five minutes left. Bell, which won the championship in 1990, will meet Reseda for the title Saturday at East Los Angeles College at 6 p.m.
Birmingham had advanced to the semifinals despite losing on the field in the playoffs to Roosevelt and Poly. Roosevelt was forced to forfeit its second-round victory because its coach was ejected midway through the game. City rules dictate a coach’s ejection automatically results in a forfeit. Poly forfeited its quarterfinal victory because it used an ineligible player.
The Chatsworth girls’ team will try to win the school’s eighth title in 10 years when the Chancellors play San Pedro on Saturday in the 4-A final at East Los Angeles College at 4 p.m.
Garfield, which lost to Hamilton in last year’s semifinals, plays Westchester at 2 p.m., in the girls’ 3-A championship.
