Dykstra: They Have No Confidence in Me

Lenny Dykstra, attempting a comeback with the Philadelphia Phillies, was discouraged after a meeting with Manager Terry Francona and acting General Manager Ed Wade. “The feeling I get is they have no confidence in my ability, and if that’s the case I think they should release me,” said Dykstra, 35, who missed the last 1 1/2 seasons because of back problems. He is competing for his old job with Doug Glanville, acquired in an off-season trade for second baseman Mickey Morandini, and is one for 15 at the plate this spring.

Pete Rose will be treated like any other fan when he visits the Cincinnati Reds’ complex in Sarasota, Fla., to see his son, Pete Jr., take part in drills. “Anywhere a fan can go, he can go,” baseball spokesman Rich Levin said.

San Francisco pitcher Danny Darwin was hit on the knee by a line during an exhibition against Oakland at Scottsdale, Ariz., and taken to a hospital, but X-rays were negative. Darwin, 42, was acquired by the Giants last season in a nine-player deal with the Chicago White Sox. . . . St. Louis right fielder Brian Jordan, coming back from wrist surgery, made his first spring start a week ahead of schedule. . . . San Diego right-hander Joey Hamilton was scratched from a start against Seattle because of a sore back. He’s expected to throw a couple of innings in a minor-league game today.
