Luxury Resort Plan Will Be Discussed

The City Council on Tuesday will study a proposal to convert an empty trailer park into a $100-million luxury resort.

Two civic groups oppose the redevelopment plans for the Treasure Island mobile home park, which include a 100-room hotel, 25 resort villas, 37 million-dollar home sites and a bluff-top park.

Members of Village Laguna said they oppose building expensive homes on the seaside setting, but they are agreeable to a resort. The South Laguna Civic Assn. wants to scrap plans for overnight accommodations and prefers turning the property into a conference center and arboretum.

But city officials said they want a resort because it is estimated to generate more than $1.5 million a year in hotel-bed tax revenue.

The council gave preliminary approval to the plans in February, but council members have said they would like to see fewer houses on the 30-acre property and stricter height limits on the hotel and villas.
