Police have identified two women who were struck by a car this weekend as they crossed an intersection in east Oxnard.
Oxnard residents Sandra Fernandez and Wilma Aguilar were taken by ambulance to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard after being hit at 8:05 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of 5th Street and Meta Avenue, according to the Oxnard Police Department.
On Sunday evening, Fernandez, 36, remained in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit. Aguilar, 34, was in fair condition.
The impact of the collision caused the women to be thrown more than 20 feet, said Oxnard Fire Capt. George Todd. The women accidentally stepped into the car’s path, Todd said.
The car’s driver, 27-year-old Victor Gutierrez of Oxnard, was on his way to work when the crash occurred. He was not cited. Police officials said the investigation is continuing.
