Although winter rains haven’t hit yet, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is urging local residents to plan ahead for potential floods.
Flood insurance, one key way to be prepared, should be purchased now because most insurance policies contain a 30-day waiting period clause. Homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, so separate flood insurance must be purchased.
Other ways to prepare include either moving water heaters, heating systems, washers, dryers and electrical boxes to an upper floor or raising them at least a foot above the base flood elevation.
