Your reporter writes that during the Afghanistan/Soviet Union war, “Afghans relied on their country’s deserts, mountains and medieval infrastructure to wear down a more powerful foe” (Oct. 1). I guess he forgot about the millions, perhaps billions of our tax dollars spent by the CIA and U.S. government to supply heavy weapons, satellite and air support, and “advisory” personnel to the Afghans, who were our proxies in another Cold War conflict. That’s what the Afghans “relied on”--the unfettered CIA.
