Chapman’s Weak Offense Ensures Loss

Chapman’s offense continued to sputter and could not produce a touchdown as the Panthers lost to Cal Lutheran, 10-6, in a nonconference football game in front of 2,010 Saturday at Cal Lutheran.
Chapman (0-5) gained only 174 yards total offense--69 rushing--and quarterbacks Greg Hyland and Todd MacKaben had four passes intercepted.
Hyland, a two-year starter who completed nine of 16 passes for 92 yards with three interceptions, split time in the second half with reserve MacKaben, who completed two of six passes for 13 yards with one interception.
The running game didn’t do much better, with Nate Ballinger gaining a team-high 45 yards in 12 carries.
Although Chapman’s special teams players Steve McLaughlin and Brian Johnson each blocked punts in the third quarter, the Panthers could only convert those big plays into one field goal--a 43-yarder--and a missed 53-yard attempt by Rodney Freer. Freer connected from 36 yards for the Panthers’ other points.
Still, Chapman trailed by only four points heading into the fourth quarter but managed only 37 yards offense in its four fourth-quarter possessions.
Cal Lutheran (3-2) scored the only touchdown when it moved 80 yards in 13 plays, scoring on Fredrik Nanhed’s 27-yard reception from Zack Hernandez to make it 7-0 with 1 minute 36 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
