Boys and Girls Club to Open Own Facility

After years of running its youth programs in borrowed quarters, the Harbor City/Harbor Gateway Boys and Girls Club will celebrate the acquisition of a place of its own with a groundbreaking ceremony today.
The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at the new site, 1220 W. 256th St., Harbor City.
The organization recently purchased the 12,000-square-foot facility with help from Los Angeles city and private foundation grants. It plans to remodel the building to include a multipurpose center, several learning centers, a computer lab, library, gymnasium with basketball court and a nutrition center.
The club, which offers a range of activities and academic help to keep youngsters safe, busy and off the streets, began operating in 1991. It has been housed at various locations, including an after-school program at Normont Elementary School.
About 600 youngsters, age 5 to 18, have participated in club programs during the last year. Officials expect they can accommodate 1,500 annually at the new facility.
