MIAMI — Al Clark and Ricky Hall hooked up on a 24-yard touchdown pass on the second play of overtime, giving Virginia Tech a 27-20 Big East Conference victory over Miami, its fourth in a row over the Hurricanes.
Clark, who had thrown for one touchdown and run for another in regulation, lofted a high pass to the right corner of the end zone, and Hall outjumped Nick Ward and come down with the ball.
Miami’s possession ended meekly as Scott Covington was sacked twice and threw an incomplete pass on fourth and 17.
Virginia Tech (3-0, 1-0) had tied the score, 20-20, with 8:35 left on Shayne Graham’s 19-yard field goal, capping a 12-play, 78-yard drive that stalled at the Miami one.
Virginia Tech forced five turnovers, including four in the third quarter.
Miami (2-1, 0-1) came out in green jerseys for the first time since 1976.
