A 46-year-old cabdriver who was severely beaten during a possible robbery at a La Mirada gas station died Saturday, Sheriff’s officials said.
James Reed of Whittier was attacked shortly before 11 p.m. Friday and collapsed after being struck by an unknown number of assailants wielding “some type of blunt object,” said Deputy Steven Flamm.
Reed was found at a Union 76 at La Mirada Boulevard and Ocaso Avenue, Flamm said.
“We think [the beating] may have happened somewhere else,” said Deputy Boris Nikolof. “He drove there and collapsed outside his car.”
Reed was taken to Whittier Hospital, where he died at 3:26 p.m. Saturday. He had worked for the All Destinations Taxi Cab Co. in Cerritos.
Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the sheriff’s homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
