Cypress Wins Softball Tournament

Sophomore Mandy Rockwell pitched two complete-game victories as Cypress won four times Sunday to win the Apple Photography softball tournament at Cerritos Sports Complex.
Rockwell struggled throughout the game, but got a popup for the final out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh as Cypress beat Phoenix, 8-7, in the title game.
Rockwell, who was the most valuable pitcher in the state tournament last year, was sharper in the semifinals as the Chargers beat Moorpark, 1-0. Rockwell is 4-0.
Moorpark had defeated Cypress, 5-4, in pool play Saturday.
Cypress’ Koral King had a double and single and drove in two runs against Phoenix.
Cypress, the two-time defending state champions, also beat Ventura, 8-0, and Los Angeles Pierce, 9-3, Sunday.
In other tournament games:
Golden West splits--The Rustlers won their opening game, defeating Antelope Valley, 7-2. Winning pitcher Jenine Salamun gave up only three hits and no earned runs. She also had two hits, drove in a run and scored another.
Kristin Vardiman hit a two-run triple to highlight a five-run fifth inning for the Rustlers (2-2-1).
Golden West lost to Phoenix, 7-2, in the semifinals.
In a Mitsubishi Classic baseball game:
Cypress 8, Merced 4--Steve Hindman had two hits and three RBIs and Adam Spiker had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the host Chargers (6-1-1).
Winning pitcher Garrett Estabrook pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief, with six strikeouts, for Cypress.
