Big night for Brethren--Brethren Christian had three winners and Calvary Chapel had two at Fontana A.B. Miller High. Calvary Chapel finished second in the team competition with 156.5 points; Temecula Valley won with 177. El Modena was fourth at 132; Villa Park was fifth (126) and Brethren Christian sixth (117).
Brethren Christian sophomore Anthony Rodriguez won the evening’s first title, defeating Brawley freshman David Villagram, 6-1, at 103 pounds.
Brethren Christian junior Mike Simpson--who won the division’s 103-pound title last year--defeated El Modena senior Jerin Williams, 13-3, at 119 pounds. Calvary Chapel junior Adam Bones beat Brethren Christian senior Joe Garcia, 10-6, at 125 pounds. Brethren Christian junior Steve Garcia beat Calvary Chapel senior Josh Johnson, 5-2, at 130.
Calvary Chapel junior Adam Benetiz won the 135-pound title with a 9-1 decision over Redlands East Valley junior Wes Lipskey. But Eagles junior Andy Tufnell was pinned by El Monte Arroyo senior Daniel Hernandez at 4:59.
Calvary Chapel senior Mike Porter had Ryan Kane, the undefeated Temecula Valley senior and defending state champion, tied 5-5 going into the third period of their 160-pound match. But Kane picked up an escape point and another when Porter was called for stalling, giving Kane a 7-5 win and his 45th consecutive victory.
“To have four finalists, three champions and one runner-up--this was a great night for Brethren Christian,” Brethren Coach Mark Cody said. “We feel great going into next week’s Masters tournament.”
In the 171-pound division, Santa Ana Valley senior Steve Sanchez edged previously unbeaten Murrieta Valley senior James Black, 9-8.
