Oxnard Uses a Late Surge to Pass Rival

Tina Samaniego scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, and Tiffany Walker made two baskets in the final minute to help Oxnard High rally for a 65-62 victory over Channel Islands in a Pacific View League girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at Oxnard.
The Yellowjackets (9-12, 4-0 in league play) moved into sole possession of first place ahead of cross-town rival Channel Islands (15-6, 3-1), ranked No. 5 in the region by The Times.
Unranked Oxnard, which trailed, 57-49, with 5:15 to play, made 19 of 24 free throws.
Walker, Sara Wilkins and Memory Rhone each scored 14 points for the Yellowjackets. Wilkins had 21 rebounds and Rhone grabbed 16.
Samaniego, who had eight assists, made a three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining to pull Oxnard to within 62-61. Walker scored the go-ahead basket.
Jaline Bradley scored 23 points, and Chenne Tuimoloau and Monique Taylor each added 16 for Channel Islands.
In other girls’ games:
Buena 50, Rio Mesa 41--Sophomore center Kelly Greathouse had 14 points and 16 rebounds to lead the top-ranked Bulldogs to a nonleague victory at Buena.
Freshman Courtney La Vere had 13 points for Buena (17-2).
Ventura 62, San Marcos 25--Alex Gientke scored 19 points, including five three-point baskets, for the No. 7-ranked Cougars (13-9, 2-2) in a Channel League victory at Ventura.
St. Bonaventure 44, La Reina 40--The Seraphs rallied to earn a share of the Tri-Valley League lead at La Reina.
Stacey Howard scored eight of her 15 points in the third quarter, when St. Bonaventure (11-8, 4-1) outscored the Regents, 15-6, to erase a 20-17 halftime deficit.
MacKenzie Vandergeest scored 14 points for La Reina (11-4, 4-1).
Carpinteria 30, Oak Park 29--Jenny Bernal’s layup with 15 seconds to play lifted the Warriors to a Tri-Valley League victory at Oak Park.
Kim Bryan and Michelle Bregar scored 10 points each for Oak Park (7-10, 3-3).
St. Mary’s 69, Bell-Jeff 39--Ana Coronado had 22 points, 17 rebounds and 12 blocked shots for the Guards (6-14, 2-4) in a Camino Real League loss at St. Mary’s (12-6, 5-0).
Campbell Hall 54, Flintridge Sacred Heart 36--Emily Abrams had 24 points and seven steals, and the Vikings (14-4) held the Tologs (3-12, 0-6) to five first-half points in a nonleague victory at Campbell Hall.
Lillama Williams scored 17 points for Flintridge Sacred Heart.
Louisville 80, Villanova Prep 23--Megan Wiser scored 19 points, Sarah Kelso had 13 and Mary Beth Fay added 10 for the Royals (13-6) in a nonleague victory at Louisville.
Brentwood 59, Village Christian 39--Jennie Lee Greslie scored 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting and had 16 rebounds for the Crusaders (10-10) in a nonleague defeat at Brentwood.
BOYS’ GAMES
Paraclete 76, Village Christian 73--Glenn Jones’ three-point basket with 22 seconds to play lifted the Spirits (8-12, 3-1) to an Alpha League victory at Village Christian.
Jones scored 26 points, including seven three-pointers to tie a school record with 108 in his career.
Clint Hamblin had 22 points, making six three-pointers on nine shots, for Village Christian (8-11, 1-3). Aaron Maxwell added 19 points.
Pasadena Marshall 90, L.A. Baptist 47--Tony DeFrank scored 10 points and Evan Regenstreif added nine in a losing effort for the Knights (6-3, 2-2) in an Alpha League game at first-place Pasadena Marshall (15-4, 4-0).
