SOUTH EL MONTE — The city’s former director of finance pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge that he embezzled more than $20,000 from municipal coffers.
Lou Delgado, 47, entered the plea in Los Angeles Municipal Court. Municipal Judge Kevin Brown set a preliminary hearing for Feb. 26.
Delgado, a Sierra Madre resident, could receive up to four years in prison if convicted on the single felony charge, according to the district attorney’s office.
He resigned in October 1997, immediately after the City Council hired an independent auditor to review city finances.
Mayor George Lujan said the $20,000 deals only with the city finances for the 1996-1997 fiscal year. City officials may request a further review of previous years, Lujan said.
Delgado is free on $25,000 bail.
