Controlled Burn Creates Smoky Skies

Ranchers near Point Mugu burned about 15 tons of tree trimmings Thursday, creating a noticeable brown haze in the area.
The controlled burn began early in the morning at Deardorff-Jackson Farms at 3220 Wood Road and was extinguished by noon, as required by the Air Pollution Quality Control District. Ranchers must receive a permit from the Fire Department before conducting burns.
“This is a routine process that a lot of these farmers do,” Ventura County fire spokesman Joe Luna said. “They clear away these orchards and plant a new crop.”
In a training exercise in Fillmore today, city and county firefighters will burn two condemned houses. Because of the exercise, River Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. between A Street and Carriage Place.
On Tuesday, fire academy trainees will learn about brush fire tactics during a 75-acre controlled burn near Foothill and Cummings roads in Santa Paula.
