GARDEN GROVE LEAGUE
* Bolsa Grande: 0-21, 0-12 in 1998. Coach: Kurt Parker (first year). Prospects: Three starters return, but in key positions: senior pitcher Laina Kinsella, senior shortstop Vanessa Camargo and sophomore catcher Angela Diaz. The team is composed of mostly freshmen and sophomores, so Parker’s task is instilling fundamentals and keeping them in the program.
* Garden Grove: 18-9-1, 9-3 in 1998. Coach: Cliff White (fifth year, 74-42-1). Prospects: Senior first baseman Autumn Gray (.508) and junior shortstop Chris Cansdale (.323) were first-team all-league players. Second-team second baseman Czarina Finona made only one error last season, and catcher Victoria Torres (.295) also returns. Nuvia Marti (12-6, 0.58) is academically ineligible but could return by playoff time. Junior Holly Large and freshman Erin Means should be able to bridge the gap until Marti’s return if they don’t give up too many walks.
* La Quinta: 7-14, 4-8 in 1998. Coach: Cassie Brothers (second year, 7-14). Prospects: Ten starters return, led by the county’s home run leader, senior Heidi Foster (.433, seven home runs, 22 RBIs). Foster is complemented by another senior, Veronica Reyes (.300), and sophomore Amber Wolf (.328, 19 runs, 29 stolen bases). No one else batted over .222, so they’ll need more help from their three junior and three senior starters. Foster (3-8, 1.40 ERA), a Times’ all-county second-team selection at first base, shares pitching duties with sophomore Monique Lucero (4-3).
* Los Amigos: 13-7, 7-5 in 1998. Coach: Gregg Aguilar (fourth year, 17-44). Prospects: After winning four games in three years, last season was a resounding success. Seven starters are back, including sophomore shortstop/catcher Elise Burke, pitcher/infielder Kim Guillen and shortstop/catcher Angela Yorba. Burke was a first-team all-league selection; Guillen and Yorba second-teamers. Three seniors, first baseman Irene Peralta, second baseman Maria Elias and outfielder Vanessa Estrada, and junior outfielder Monica Curiel, round out the experienced starters.
* Pacifica: 29-3, 12-0 in 1998. Coach: Rob Weil (10th year, 194-42-1). Prospects: Two-time Times Orange County player of the year Amanda Freed (17-2, 0.33) is at UCLA, but everyone else returns, including senior Jessica Soto (12-1, 0.94). Times second-team catcher Toria Auelua (.381, 21 RBIs) leads a host of all-league players: senior first baseman Nicole Pickett (.309, 16 RBIs), senior second baseman Dara Webb (.341, 10 RBIs), senior outfielder Tiffany Wallace (.364, 11 RBIs), junior shortstop Diana Barreras (.364, 21 RBIs) and junior right fielder Shawna Goessling (.268, 26 runs). Pacifica, which averaged 6.2 runs, is vying for its third straight section title.
* Rancho Alamitos: 13-8, 8-4 in 1998. Coach: Mike Gogan (first year). Prospects: The Vaqueros’ strength is their battery of junior pitcher Kristina Hyllested (12-8, 1.97), a first-team all-league selection, and second-team sophomore catcher Jami Weddle (.327, four homers, 17 RBIs). Eight starters return, but two freshmen, shortstop Ciarra Hildreth and third baseman Jennifer Basile, will anchor the left side. Britney Kauffman moves from second base to center field to improve the outfield play.
* Santiago: 6-18, 2-10 in 1998. Coach: Corky Driver (12th year). Prospects: Senior shortstop Alicia Morley (.310) returns to the top of the batting order for a team that must score more runs to be successful. Sophomore catcher/pitcher Jody Robertson (.293) was a second-team all-league choice. Junior Alison Decker (11-12) will also pitch. Third baseman Amber Tuilaepa, a good contact hitter, is among three freshmen, including second baseman Jesus Gonzalez and left fielder Angelica Castro, who will start for the Cavaliers.
