Navy Bases’ Services to Be Consolidated
The Navy has plans to consolidate leadership of public works services at Ventura County’s two naval basses under one commanding officer.
Starting in October, the as-yet-unnamed commander will manage fire services, military police and base utilities for the Naval Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme and the Point Mugu Naval Air Weapons Station.
“Bottom line, this is a Navy-wide process to generate savings,” said Capt. Jim McConnell, Port Hueneme’s commanding officer, who added that money might be reinvested in new technology or weapons.
The decision follows the consolidation of other support services at Port Hueneme and Point Mugu last year.
The missions of the bases will remain the same and the bases will keep their respective names.
