Insurer Lawsuits

* Re “Insurers to Launch High-Profile Effort to Void New Law,” Oct. 14: Until Gov. Gray Davis signed legislation allowing consumers to sue at-fault parties’ insurance companies, there was nothing to stop insurers’ abuses. Nothing to stop insurers who wrongfully stall paying legitimate claims while waiting for elderly or severely injured claimants to die; nothing to stop insurers who delay payment to claimants lacking the financial resources to maintain a lengthy battle. If the insurance companies that have filed a referendum to block the law succeed, we’ll continue to be without remedies against some insurers’ reprehensible tactics.
There is ample evidence that insurance companies stall payment of legitimate claims every day. Beware of the phony petitions now circulating.
