A Reno truck driver appeared in court for the first time Tuesday on drunk driving, vehicular manslaughter and other felony charges stemming from a fatal accident that occurred when his big rig slammed into the rear of a Mercedes-Benz.
Raymond Daniel Glenn, 39, was also charged with trying to flee the scene of the crash. His arraignment was postponed until Nov. 19. The charges, all felonies, could bring a maximum term of more than 11 years in prison if Glenn is convicted, said district attorney’s spokeswoman Tori Richards.
Three other victims were also injured in the crash that occurred at a busy intersection in Orange about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Glenn’s blood-alcohol level was allegedly three times the legal limit when his truck hit a tree, then veered across traffic lanes and struck the Mercedes, which was waiting in a left-turn pocket, police said. Motorist Makoto Mark Kato, 65, died after the gas tank erupted, sparking a fire so intense it melted the tires on both vehicles, police said.
According to reports, Glenn got out of the cab and first walked, then began running away. He was caught by witnesses. Glenn is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.
