A ‘No’ Vote for A

* Re: School Bond Issue A for Huntington Beach Union High School District: The building repairs and program restorations needed are obvious. However, as a former resident, the cause requires a historical review. From 1978 to 1988 the district’s annual budget went from 78% solely for employee salaries and benefits to over 88% of the total budget. This decreased building maintenance and increased annually “deferred maintenance.” This action has brought the district to its present deplorable condition. Buildings and maintenance people have no power.
The money has gone where the teacher-union elected school boards wanted it to go: salaries and benefits. If it were possible to elect community leaders to school boards instead, this situation could be avoided. Until that time comes, the educational labor unions will direct the funds and periodically hide behind the children when there is the need to restore buildings or programs. Bond issue A’s money will be protected by an oversight committee? Guess who will appoint the committee? The same people who brought about the problem. Vote no on A.
