Supervisors OK Tax Breaks for Farmers

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday unanimously approved guidelines to offer farmers expanded tax breaks for keeping their land in agriculture for at least 20 years.
A state land conservation program, administered locally by the county, gives farmers a 30% reduction in property taxes in return for keeping cropland in production.
Under revisions approved by supervisors, owners of prime farmland will have the option of extending 10-year contracts an additional decade in return for an extra 5% reduction in taxes.
County administrators estimate 35% of the 1,200 current 10-year contracts will convert to 20-year pacts during the next two years.
