Activists seeking to preserve Barham Ranch as a 526-acre nature site have created a legal defense fund and are seeking donations. According to Theresa Sears, a fund-raising group has received about $23,000 for the fund, but its goal is to raise at least $100,000 to pay the San Francisco law firm Schute, Mihaly & Weinberger.
The firm is representing Orange Park Acres, two nonprofit preservation groups and a private citizen in a lawsuit against the Serrano Water District and SunCal, a developer.
The water district has agreed to sell Barham Ranch to SunCal and is suing the Orange Unified School District to sell the land, which they co-own. Anyone interested in donating to the fund may call (714) 538-8130.
