Rebels Attack Jail, Freeing 74 Inmates

Storming a provincial jail, guerrillas of the National Liberation Army and the People’s Liberation Army detonated a powerful car bomb that ripped a hole in the prison wall, allowing 74 prisoners to escape, officials said. The leftist rebels unleashed a barrage of automatic weapons fire Saturday night on guards at the Modelo jail in Cucuta, Colombia, near the Venezuelan border, a regional police commander said. Four prisoners were killed and two guards were wounded, a National Police official said.
