Cal State Fullerton Holds Off Cal Poly

Cal State Fullerton scored in four of the first five innings and held on for an 8-7 Big West Conference victory over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday night at San Luis Obispo.
The Titans (23-14, 12-5) moved closer to Big West leader Long Beach State (25-15, 13-5), which lost to UC Santa Barbara.
The Titans scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by Matt Belfanti, but fell behind when Cal Poly (20-19, 11-9) came right back with three runs off Titan starter George Carralejo. Fullerton then scored a run in the second to tie the score at 3-3.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Titans took a 6-3 lead with an RBI single by David Bacani and run-scoring groundballs by Robert Guzman and Belfanti. They scored twice more in the fifth.
Matt Sorensen (5-0) got the victory. Kirk Saarloos pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief, striking out three, to earn his second save.
The series concludes at 1 p.m. today.
