He Has the Answer to the ‘Hack-a-Shaq’

While it is admirable for Myron Hood to propose a solution to the “Hack-a-Shaq” syndrome [Viewpoint, April 22], his contention that intentionally fouling poor-shooting players is detrimental to the integrity of the game is ludicrous. Exploiting a team’s or player’s weakness is a part of sports.

Rather than rewriting the rule book and asking referees to issue flagrant fouls, perhaps NBA teams should demand their players to improve their free-throw shooting to the point that, when the game is on the line, it’s possible to have five professional basketball players on the court who can actually make a free throw.
