Baker Advances at Royal Troon

Don Baker of Canoga Park defeated fellow American Chip Lutz, 1 up, on Friday in the second round of match play at the British Mid-Amateur Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland.
Baker will play Giles Legg of Dudsbury Golf Club in Dorset, England, in the third round today. Legg tied for medalist honors in qualifying at 70-73--143.
Baker, who qualified for match play by shooting 76-73--149, defeated Angus Lamond of Haggs Castle Golf Club in Glasgow, Scotland, in the first round on Friday morning, 8 and 7.
FOOTBALL
* Nelson Wong has replaced Phil Avalos as coach at St. Genevieve High, Athletic Director Marlon Archey said.
Wong coached St. Genevieve’s baseball team last season.
SOFTBALL
* Antelope Valley plays host Kalamazoo, Mich. in the Big League Softball World Series championship game at 8 a.m. PST today.
Antelope Valley, West Regional champion, defeated Dunedin, Fla., 9-2, on Friday to win its fourth consecutive game and finish 5-1 in round-robin play.
Antelope Valley players include Tara Jensen and Erin Yasumoto of Lancaster High; Vanessa Gallegos and Monique Saldana of Palmdale; and Keri Pulcifer of Highland. The manager is Lester Ball.
Ball will have his pick of three pitchers in the championship game: Candace Huling, Amanda Wachsmuth and Marciea Ball.
