Satellite Won’t Resume Transmission

Mexico’s sole satellite operator said there was little hope it would revive operations on one of its four satellites, whose failure over the weekend disrupted automatic bank tellers, radio and television broadcast, beepers and rural telephone service. Solidaridad I, made by General Motors Corp.’s unit Hughes Electronics Corp., stopped transmitting Sunday at 10:45 a.m. Mexico City time, satellite owner Satelites Mexicanos (Satmex) said. The satellite owned by Satmex--in turn 49% owned by New York-based Loral Space & Communications--carried signals for about 107 Mexican and international clients. Satmex immediately began offering space on its other three satellites and on other companies’ satellites.
