Harvard-Westlake 8, Cabrillo 7--Julie Spataru scored with 11 seconds left to lift the Wolverines in the championship game of the Newbury Park tournament.
Paloma Slezak scored three goals for the Wolverines (5-2), the last on a penalty shot that gave Harvard-Westlake a 5-2 lead with 42 seconds left in the second quarter. A goal by Courtney Quinn 37 seconds later gave the Wolverines a 6-2 lead at halftime.
“They knew what we were going to do on that last play,” Harvard-Westlake Coach Rich Corso said. “And we knew if they collapsed in the middle we were going to have to kick it out for the shot. This is a huge win for us because we’ve kind of been stuck in the mud all season.”
Emily Caesar scored on a rebound to extend Harvard-Westlake’s lead to 7-4 with eight seconds left in the third quarter. Cabrillo (4-1) scored three unanswered goals in a four-minute span, the last a high shot by Jessica Alvarado with 24 seconds left.
Quinn had two goals and two assists. Carolyn Keifer made 11 saves for Harvard-Westlake, which outshot Cabrillo, 17-12.
In other tournament games:
Crescenta Valley 6, Newbury Park 1--Debra Snyder scored two goals for the Falcons (11-1) in the third-place game.
Amy Brunton had five saves for Crescenta Valley, which lost its first game this season, 3-1, to Cabrillo in the semifinals.
Jennifer Martens scored for the Panthers (5-1) in the first quarter.
Royal 11, Agoura ‘B’ 3--Jenn Nautroup scored five goals and Carie Karamos added two for the Highlanders (8-2), who finished fifth.
Lindsay Llewellyn scored twice and Kyle Thkatch once for Agoura (4-3), which entered its junior varsity because 11 varsity players were on recruiting trips.
Ventura 6, El Segundo 4--Amy Simpson scored two goals and Shasta Kellerhouse made nine saves for the Cougars (3-3) in the seventh-place game.
