2 Barak Campaign Activists Arrested

JERUSALEM — Police arrested two activists from Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak’s election campaign Wednesday on suspicion of illegally raising and using campaign funds.
The arrests were the first in an investigation ordered by the attorney general after a damning report by the state comptroller on the campaign funding of Barak’s One Israel coalition.
Police spokesman Uzi Sanduri would not identify the suspects, but Israeli radio said they were Shmuel Levi and Ronen Yamini, both named in the report as active in several nonprofit societies involved in the funding of Barak’s campaign.
The police searched the homes of Levi and Yamini, the radio said, and Yamini was later placed under house arrest.
State Comptroller Eliezer Goldberg wrote that One Israel “trampled on the law” in its campaign funding.
Police are also investigating the campaign funding of the Likud Party and three others.
