I just finished reading “Vt. Governor Signs Bill on Civil Unions” (April 27). Being a native Vermonter, I was pleased by the political courage displayed by the Legislature in passing this bill.
With elections coming up in November, I am sure there will be some who will not be elected again because of their vote on this issue. Their display of political fortitude equals that of their southern brethren who voted to pass the Civil Rights Act in the ‘60s.
There is no doubt in my mind that some of the people who voted yes (if not most of them) knew this would be their last term in office.
Sometimes in life we do things for no reason other than the fact that it was the right thing to do. This was one of those times.
