Corona del Mar Survives Salem, Laguna Beach

Corona del Mar, ranked sixth in the county, overcame 34 kills from Laguna Beach’s Sarah Salem and beat the No. 7 Artists, 2-15, 15-11, 15-5, 6-15, 15-11, Tuesday in the Pacific Coast League opener for both schools.
Lindsay Anstandig recorded 16 kills and five aces for the Sea Kings (3-2, 1-0), who lost the fourth game after host Laguna Beach moved Salem from her middle blocker position to outside hitter. But Corona del Mar adjusted in the final game, taking advantage of Salem’s absence in the middle to take the match.
Laguna Beach is 2-3, 0-1.
In another Pacific Coast League match:
University 3, Northwood 1--Melissa Zapiain had 14 kills and seven blocks for the visiting Trojans (4-4, 1-0), who won, 15-5, 2-15, 15-10, 15-7. Northwood is 0-5, 0-1.
In the Empire League:
Century 3, Kennedy 2--Elizabeth Mendoza had 22 kills and Alicia De Los Santos added 12 as host Century won, 15-6, 15-8, 14-16, 14-16, 15-12. Maria Orozco had 41 assists for the Centurions (5-2, 1-0).
Regina Vinson led Kennedy (2-3, 0-1) with 15 kills.
In the Garden Grove League:
Bolsa Grande 3, Los Amigos 1--Bolsa Grande’s Ami Dabalack had 10 kills as the Matadors (5-5, 2-2) won, 14-16, 15-7, 15-0, 15-5.
In the South Coast League:
No. 10 El Toro 3, Trabuco Hills 9--Krista Kimble had 11 kills for the visiting Chargers (6-0, 1-0), who won, 15-10, 15-3, 15-4. Trabuco Hills is 3-4, 0-2.
No. 1 San Clemente 3, No. 9 Capistrano Valley 0--Katie Daley had 18 kills for the visiting Tritons (4-0, 1-0), who prevailed, 15-12, 15-7, 15-9. Capistrano Valley is 4-4, 0-1.
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 3, Fountain Valley 1--Esperanza dropped the first game to Fountain Valley, then swept the next three in a 10-15, 15-6, 15-5, 15-11 win over the visiting Barons. Kristy Chester had 12 kills for the Aztecs (4-3, 1-0).
No. 3 Huntington Beach 3, Edison 0--Anya Ferry had eight kills for Huntington Beach, which won, 15-3, 16-14, 15-13. The Oilers are 6-2 overall, 1-0 in league.
