The historic City Gym and Pool will reopen its doors today after a yearlong renovation to revitalize the center.
The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. with music by the Dwyer Middle School Band.
Built in 1931, the recreation center at 1600 Palm Ave. was originally called the Huntington Beach Elementary School Gymnasium and Plunge. It survived the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, while Huntington Beach Elementary did not.
The Huntington Beach City School Board donated the building to the city in the 1960s, and it has served as a recreational center ever since, city officials said.
Swimming lessons and courses in holiday cooking, ballet, karate and boxing aerobics will be offered at the center.
