School Board Eyes Growth Projections

Establishing new school boundaries for an expected boost in student enrollment will be the subject of a special meeting Saturday of the Simi Valley school board.
Officials will discuss new enrollment figures at the meeting, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Simi Valley Unified School District headquarters, 875 E. Cochran St.
Growth in the next few years is expected to continue, but not dramatically, said Mel Roop, the assistant superintendent of facilities and property for the school district.
It will probably take months for school leaders to redraw school boundaries, board President Carla Kurachi said. “We won’t make any decisions Saturday,” she said. “Before we do anything we’ll want lots of community input.”
A proposal for year-round school is also on the agenda for Saturday’s meeting, but Kurachi said it’s highly unlikely school leaders will seriously consider that option.
“The board has no interest in looking at that, absolutely none,” Kurachi said.
School board members will also talk about whether to reopen one of four schools that were closed when enrollment declined some years ago.
