Conservancy, 2 Projects Win Preservation Awards

LOS ANGELES — The Conservancy and two Los Angeles projects that saved historic buildings are among winners of National Preservation Awards. They will be honored Nov. 2 during a conference here of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The Los Angeles Conservancy in 1978 fought a proposal to tear down the Central Library, which was considered too small and outdated at the time. Since that time, the organization has helped to preserve various historical sites.
Among other honorees are Southwestern University School of Law and the American Cinematheque, a nonprofit society dedicated to film preservation.
Southwestern University restored the Bullocks Wilshire building. It now serves as part of the school’s facilities.
The American Cinematheque bought the Egyptian Theatre, which was closed in 1992 after being damaged during renovations. After the 1994 Northridge earthquake, the Egyptian suffered more damage, but it has been restored and reinforced.
