Comets Streaking After a Poor Start

Westchester’s football team started the season by committing six turnovers in a shutout defeat at Crenshaw.

Not exactly the way an annual contender for the City championship wants to begin.

“We worked hard on eliminating those mistakes and getting the timing down after that game,” Westchester Coach Larry Wein said this week. “We’re just much better now.”

How much better is reflected in the Comets’ 6-1 record.

Westchester defeated defending City champion Carson in Week 3 and has rolled through the first half of its Western League schedule.

“The Carson game was important because it was validation,” Wein said. “It lets your kids know you have a good team and what might be possible if they keep working hard.”

Westchester is thriving without the benefit of players the caliber of recent stars such as Charles Drake and Sam Cunningham.

Running backs Jahlamb Sinclair and Jason Benson are flourishing behind a line anchored by Mark Fenton and Duane Hunter.

Linebackers Antoine Bell, Norman White and Devon McDonald and defensive back Jamal Fletcher lead the defense.

“We have a lot of really good players but no marquee player,” Wein said. “It’s made a difference in terms of the way we have been able to motivate the kids.

“At many positions, we don’t have a first string. We have two good strings on both sides of the ball.

Westchester plays University on Friday before its two toughest league games against Venice and Palisades to finish the regular season.

“We’re a team that is getting better every week,” Wein said. “Hopefully, we’ll be at our best in that final game.”
