Peters’ Run Lifts Cougars Over El Toro

Bryan Peters’ third touchdown of the game, a 61-yard run on fourth and one with 2:37 remaining, gave Capistrano Valley its first South Coast League victory of the season Friday night, 28-21 over El Toro.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Chargers got on the board when Vinnie Mascari ran 65 yards for a touchdown with 11:02 remaining in the second quarter.

The Cougars came right back when Peters ran in from seven yards, but the extra point failed and El Toro led, 7-6.

El Toro stretched the lead to 14-6 with 1:51 left in the half when Mike Wirth capped a 64-yard drive with a five-yard scoring run.

But Capistrano Valley turned the momentum its way with 20 seconds left in the half, when linebacker Waylon Wittry blocked a punt and Travis Becktel recovered in the end zone for a Cougar touchdown. Becktel then caught a pass from quarterback David Frazeur for a two-point conversion to tie the score, 14-14.

Mascari fumbled the second-half kickoff, giving Capistrano Valley the ball on the El Toro 21. That set up Peters’ five-yard touchdown run to give the Cougars a 21-14 advantage.

El Toro tied it, 21-21, in the fourth quarter when Andy Neja caught a three-yard pass from Tom Kirchmeyer.

The Cougars will host Dana Hills next week.
