Two touchdowns in as many minutes during the third quarter helped Calvary Chapel to a 21-6 victory over Laguna Beach Saturday at Westminster High.
A Laguna Beach player was taken off the field in an ambulance in the final minutes. Jesse Duker, an Artist tight end, was reportedly taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Orange for observation after he fell down walking back to the line of scrimmage with 1 minute 50 seconds remaining in the game.
Laguna Beach Coach David Holland said he thought Duker went down on a pass pattern on the previous play and might have been hit in the back.
Calvary Chapel (2-0) took a 14-6 lead midway through the third quarter.
Blake West caught a 22-yard pass from Terry Mermer with 7:11 left in the quarter to give Calvary Chapel a 7-6 lead.
After a punt by Laguna Beach (0-2), Mermer threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to P.J. Novak to increase the Eagles’ lead to 14-6.
Mermer added a final touchdown with 9:09 left in the game, running in from one yard.
Mermer completed 11 of 28 passes for 206 yards, with West catching seven for 121 yards. Merz completed 16 of 33 for 215 yards.
