Aid Workers Charged in Death Threats

Three U.N. workers were arraigned on charges of threatening to kill the U.S. ambassador to Kenya and four other people in an attempt to cover up an extortion racket.

Letters threatening Ambassador Johnnie Carson, the top U.S. immigration official at the embassy, Joseph Martin, and three UNHCR workers were written as if they were from suspected terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden, prosecutors said.

The defendants--George Ngodhe Juma, Peter Okoth Alingo and Susan Muthoni--were also charged with attempting to extort more than $22,000 from refugees seeking resettlement in Europe and the U.S.
