Flames, Vernon Keep Detroit Offense Icy

Mike Vernon ended his 13-game winless streak that lasted 10 months with a 28-save performance as the Calgary Flames beat the Detroit Red Wings, 2-0, Monday night at Calgary, Canada.
Vernon, making his seventh start this season, was 0-11-2 since his last victory, on Feb. 9. It was his 27th career shutout.
Jarome Iginla scored at 4:11 of the third period and Rob Niedermayer scored into an empty net with 15 seconds remaining.
Detroit (22-6-2-1) has scored three goals during its four-game winless skid.
Carolina 4, New York Rangers 3--Ron Francis scored a power-play goal 2:36 into overtime to lift Carolina at New York. Eric Lindros was called for tripping Sean Hill at 1:51 of the extra session to give Carolina the man advantage.
New York’s Petr Nedved scored with 4:56 left in regulation on a power play to force overtime. Lindros and Theo Fleury each had a goal and an assist for New York.
Carolina’s Tom Barasso had 40 saves.

Vancouver 1, Tampa Bay 1--Brad Richards scored midway through the third period to help the Lightning get a point at Vancouver, Canada. Henrik Sedin scored for the Canucks.

Montreal 4, Minnesota 0--Oleg Petrov had a goal and two assists and Jose Theodore stopped 24 shots as the Canadiens won at home to stop a five-game winless streak.

Philadelphia 3, Atlanta 1--Jeremy Roenick and Keith Primeau scored third-period goals at Philadelphia, and Roman Cechmanek stopped 14 of 15 shots.

Columbus 3, New Jersey 1--Espen Knutsen’s goal ended Columbus’ 10-period scoring drought as the Blue Jackets won at Columbus, Ohio.
