Rebecca Vance spared the Camarillo High girls’ basketball team the embarrassment of squandering a 15-point first-half lead.
The senior forward preserved a 50-42 victory over Quartz Hill with two baskets and two free throws in the final minute of a Southern Section Division I-AA first-round playoff game Saturday night at Camarillo.
Monica Oakley’s layup 30 seconds into the fourth quarter gave the Scorpions a 42-35 lead. But Camarillo (21-5) was held to two points over the next 6 1/2 minutes.
Quartz Hill (17-8) did not fare much better. The Rebels were unable to make a basket and converted only five of 10 free throws.
Quartz Hill, which never led, cut its deficit to 44-40 when Sharonne Herbert made one of two free throws with 1:45 to play, but got no closer.
“We made it a lot harder than it was,” Camarillo Coach John Harbour said. “We were lucky to win.”
