‘Dance’ Dominates Holiday Weekend

“Save the Last Dance” wasn’t on anybody’s radar screens in Hollywood, but the teen-oriented film became the biggest opening film ever over the long Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, grossing $27.5 million over the four-day period.
“When you can attract the teen audience like that, you can have a huge hit,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations Co. “I think that the marketing tie-in with MTV was key. They heavily saturated MTV with information about this film.”
Touchstone Pictures’ urban comedy “Double Take” debuted in fourth place with $11.7 million, while MGM’s suspense thriller, “Antitrust,” opened out of the top 10 with $5.5 million.
Dergarabedian said that this year’s King holiday had the best movie revenues ever, with box office for the 50 top films coming in around $170 million. The previous best was in 1998, the year of “Titanic,” which saw the weekend total hit $132 million.
