One man was sent to a hospital after being rescued while boogie-boarding at Crystal Cove and a baby was in good condition after being pulled from a swimming pool in Fullerton, authorities said Sunday.
Crystal Cove state lifeguards used a portable defibrillator for the first time since it was acquired this summer on Joselito Ortega, 37, a boogie-boarder from Lakewood, said Ken Kramer, a lifeguard supervisor.
Despite calm surf, Ortega was observed in distress after he fell off a boogie board about 3:15 p.m. surfing Reef Point, Kramer said.
Lifeguards, who used the defibrillator to help get a pulse, immediately assisted paramedics who transported the victim to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach where he was in critical condition late Sunday.
In an unrelated incident, a 1-year-old baby who accidentally fell into a swimming pool at a Fullerton apartment complex was taken to a hospital for observation, fire officials said Sunday.
The baby, who never lost consciousness, was quickly taken out of the pool by witnesses at 3:25 p.m., a fire spokeswoman said.
