Casualties Disputed in Rebel-Army Clash

Clashes between Burundi government forces and Hutu rebels have killed at least 19 civilians and 22 soldiers in the last week on the outskirts of Bujumbura, the capital, witnesses said.
The army disputed the figures. Spokesman Col. Augustin Nzabampema said 50 rebels had been killed but no soldiers. He added that some of the civilians reported dead may have been rebels.
But the witnesses said they have given authorities the names of slain civilians.
