Sometimes, Being a Fan Is Not a Pleasant Job

With the days winding down, I offer the Top Six Unpleasant Surprises of this baseball season (Note: The Angels’ swoon doesn’t qualify as a “surprise”):
1. The Texas Rangers finishing 40 games out, after signing A-Rod to that $252-million deal.
2. Rickey Henderson stumbling and snarling his way toward Ruth and Cobb’s records.
3. The Dodgers’ starting rotation.
4. The tradition-rich Boston Red Sox’s abrupt collapse and uncharacteristic loss of composure
5. Gary Sheffield’s bout with “mad cow” disease during spring training.
6. John Rocker’s fastball suddenly becoming as suspect as his common sense.
