Expensive Camp Cushy
Regarding Christopher Reynolds’ article “A Hop Above Santa Barbara, Camp Cushy” (Weekend Escape, July 21): For years my family and I enjoyed El Capitan when it was a “rustic campground.” It was one of the most beautiful campgrounds along the Central Coast. I was disappointed at new owner Chuck Blitz’s decision to go upscale.
As for Reynolds’ reaction to the camping prices and the prices in the general store: There’s a sucker born every minute.

Although I enjoy Weekend Escapes, they can be a bit costly, and Reynolds’ was no exception.
For 15 years our Sunday school camped at El Capitan on Memorial Day weekends, and it was not rustic. There were full hookups on grassy areas, and people with tents could set up next to those in RVs. The only improvement needed was in the bathroom plumbing.
If you must cook your meals and have a smelly bathroom, why go? For $172 a night, there are cheaper places to take a family for a weekend of camping.
