Era of Citizen-Politicians

Re “ ‘The Body’ May Be Gone but the Spirit Will Rock On,” Commentary, June 25:
Matt Bai understands very well the electoral appeal and political significance of Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. Whereas term limits failed to turn out professional politicians and create a new generation of citizen-politicians, Gov. Ventura was truly that citizen-politician. Due to the existing political realities, his background as a professional wrestler and an entertainer told him when to exit the public stage.
The establishment and elites of the Democratic and Republican parties should never again dismiss the likes of Ross Perot, Jesse Ventura and Sen. John McCain. To do so will be at their own electoral risk.
